Aquamarine

What is Aquamarine?

Aquamarine is a blue or blue-green type of beryl, which is a beryllium aluminum silicate mineral with a hardness of 7.5-8 on the Mohs hardness scale.  It is a hexagonal (trigonal) crystal and its pigment is iron.  Historically, it's first uses were recorded in Greece between 300 and 500 B.C. and its name in Latin means "water of the sea".  The name is a perfect name for this calming blue crystal. A majority of Aquamarine is formed in cavities under the Earth’s surface, during the crystallization of magma, where the cavities allow the crystals room to grow and slowly cool. Aquamarine is commonly found in granite pegmatites and metamorphic rocks and has been mined in Brazil, Pakistan, The United States, Afghanistan, Africa, and Australia.  Its color is reminiscent of the beautiful shades of the Mediterranean ocean, and the tranquility it brings on an emotional level is a reflection of this.

Does Aquamarine have any mystical qualities?

Aquamarine is first referenced in Ancient Greek Mythology.  The myth is that Aquamarine washed ashore after spilling from the treasure chests of Sirens.  Sirens are mermaid-like creatures famous for seducing sailors and leading them to their demise.  Sailors used it as a talisman (referred to as the "Mermaid" Stone) to protect them while at sea and to bring them good luck.

In the Bible and in Jewish tradition, aquamarine is believed to be the Tarshish Gem, which was one of the Hoshen stones.  The Hoshen stones are the gemstones the adorn the ceremonial breastplate worn by the high priests of the ancient Israelites.  Rashi and 14th Century Rabbi Behave associated aquamarine to the Tribe of Asher, one of the 12 tribes of Israel.

Aquamarine beryl: A bluish-green beryl that is linked to the eighth stone of the New Jerusalem, Aquamarine beryl is a rare gemstone, but still managed to find its entry into Bible in Revelation 21:20

In Hinduism: The aquamarine represents the throat chakra, also called the fifth chakra, one of the seven chakras in the body through which energy flows, according to some beliefs, particularly Indian religions such as Hinduism and Buddhism. The throat chakra pertains to communication and self-expression.

Aquamarine's powers of revelation were also said to help one in search for lost or hidden things. According to folklore, aquamarine would bring victory in battles and legal disputes.

Does Aquamarine have any healing properties?

On a crystal healing level, the aquamarine stone brings tranquility, courage, and fearlessness.  The calm associated with this stone is not the type of calm that puts you to sleep, but a calm and tranquil sharp attention.

The properties of aquamarine related to physical healing are thought to be closely connected with breathing. Sometimes referred to as the “breath stone,” aquamarine is known to alleviate sinus, lung, and respiratory problems. It is also believed to help with bronchitis, colds, hay fever, and various allergies.

Which month is Aquamarine for?  Which sign is Aquamarine for?

Aquamarine is an amazing stone and is the birthstone for the Month of March and the Zodiac sign of Pisces.  Pisces often struggle to have their voices be heard, and this can be related to the throat chakra being blocked. Aquamarine is like medicine for the soul when it comes to opening the throat chakra and speaking their truth freely.

Cleansing and Charging your Aquamarine Crystals and Jewelry

To cleanse Aquamarine, fill a bowl with warm water and gentle dish soap. Soak the stone for about 10 minutes and gently scrub it with a toothbrush to remove any particles from the surface. Rinse the stone afterward in cold water and dry it off with a soft towel or cloth.

Avoid using anything to clean Aquamarine that contains alcohol or ammonia. Do not use abrasive sponges and brushes that could damage the gemstone. If you are cleaning Aquamarine jewelry, the metal setting will affect how it is cleaned. The Aquamarine stone loves the rain, so you can also place the pieces in a safe place in the rain for cleansing the stones and charging it up naturally.  The stones will be much more potent after doing this.

Aquamarine is susceptible to becoming cloudy and smudged and you'll want to keep the stone clean and shiny.  Aquamarine is a gorgeous stone to wear as an accessory and for aiding in meditation practices.
